Bernard had been given $20,000 shillings (about $5) to use towards school fees, and when he misused it he was afraid of being punished by his family. He ran to the slums outside Kampala and was living there when African Hearts Organization found him. He was brought to the transitional home and later reunited with his family. His parents are struggling to make a living, and are often not able to pay his school fees. Bernard is in P7, loves to play soccer and dreams of becoming a doctor.
